A friend of mine says that bluegrass music is "ever lonesome, but never
blue." No matter how mournful it sounds or how grim the subject matter
of the lyrics of some of those traditional tunes, bluegrass is just
plain fun music to hear and play. These guys get that.
Listening to Hogmolly's debut album, "Hickadelic Jazzgrass,"
with its live sounding studio mix, is as much fun as a Saturday night at
Harlow's, in Springfield, Missouri. With an all-original mix, Bo,
Matt and Jeff strut their unique musical stuff--based in hillbilly
and bluegrass music, but influenced by R&B, funk, blues, acid rock and
jazz. This is the best hickadelic jazzgrass album by a band named
after an ugly fish that lives in the clear streams of the Ozarks, that
I've heard all year.
If you can't make it to a Hogmolly gig soon, crank up this CD on
your stereo and dance around your house. It'll make the neighbors wonder
what you're up to. And it'll be fun.
